Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission

2018-2019 Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission Application

Purpose: 

A. To provide an opportunity for the youth of the City of Omaha to acquire a greater knowledge of and appreciation for the American political system through active participation in that system; and

B. To help the Mayor hear the perspective of students by working directly with representatives of the youth; and

C. To serve the youth of the City of Omaha by:

1. Providing educational opportunities through community projects

2. Encouraging the development of future community leaders

3. Promoting community pride and personal self-esteem

 

Policy:

The Mayor shall appoint a Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission composed of a diverse selection of up to 50 juniors and seniors from the Omaha area. The commission will meet at least once a month during the school year with the exception of December, under the direction of the Mayor's Office. The Mayor's Office will determine the students appropriate to participate in the Commission.

 

Selection and Term of Commission Members:

The Mayor's Office will solicit applications from participating Metro Area schools, local non-profit youth organizations, and/or home school programs for participants. The students must be currently enrolled as a junior or senior in good academic standing at an Omaha Metro Area high school or show proof of enrollment in a home school program. The appointment of a student for the Commission shall be for one year from September 30 through July 1 of the following year.
