Appointment Process: Appointed by Mayor; approved by the Omaha City Council.

Special Qualifications: Museum curator, architect or landscape architect, representative of local non-profit visual arts corporation or association, visual art teacher, commercial visual artist or designer, two established visual artists, and two at-large members.

Summary of Duties: Makes recommendations on artwork donated or acquired by the City (i.e. artistic merit, the value of pieces); advisory committee to other City boards in all matters regarding visual art and aesthetics.



  1. provide a system of review for acceptance and placement of public art gifts to the city;
  2. provide a means to improve and maintain the visual and cultural aspects of the city;
  3. expand public experience through exposure to culture through various art forms which enhance and improve public facilities and the city's environment;
  4. encourage and stimulate citizens, developers, landowners, contractors, and architects to support displays of art for public enjoyment.

Public Art Omaha App

The Public Art Commission in collaboration with Omaha by Design has developed a Public Art Omaha mobile phone app for iPhone and Android. Users can find the nearest public art, take art tours, even suggest pieces for inclusion. Visit for instructions on how to download the app.   


Downtown Omaha Art Walk


In the spring of 2009, the Public Art Commission organized the City’s first Downtown Omaha Art Walk, a tour of 22 pieces throughout the downtown area. Locations include the Gene Leahy Mall, the Hilton Hotel, and the Qwest Center and more.  

The entire tour takes about an hour to complete, so download the brochure and follow the instructions to enjoy Omaha’s art. Download the Omaha Art Walk Brochure.
